Dutch architect Petrus Josephus Hurbertus took up the challenge of designing a new railway station on Amsterdam’s waterfront and it was completed in 1889. Amsterdam Centraal was the city’s biggest engineering project of the 19th century. The building sits on top of three artificial islands supported by 8,687 wooden poles. The station is now coming to to the end of a major renovation project. Oude Kerk, known as the “Old Church” is the city’s first church and its oldest monument. It stands on the site of a wooden chapel built around 1250, which was destroyed by fire. The church was rebuilt as a small stone Church in the 14th century.

De Groenlandse Pakhuizen (Greenland Warehouses) are a series of three monumental waterfront warehouses at Keizersgracht 44 in the western Canal District. The three buildings have step-gables which is rare in Amsterdam as most have spout gables. The red shutters look particularly vibrant when the sun strikes them in the morning!

The warehouses were built by some participants in the Nordic or Greenland Whaling Company and date back to 1620. They are now converted into luxury apartments.
