How many canals & bridges are there in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam, also known as “Venice of the North”, has 165 canals. The total length of these canals is 50km which is about 31 miles. The most prominent canals are Herengracht, Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht & Singel. There are 1281 bridges in Amsterdam. Magere Brug and Blauwbrug best-known bridges whilst Torensluis is the oldest.

Why are there so many canals in Amsterdam?

Before Amsterdam's canals & houses were built, the area was mostly swampland. The swamps were systematically drained one section at a time which created islands surrounded by canals. This approach is a typical Dutch can system where the waterway is a means of transport, water management and irrigation. Additionally, the canals formed part of the city's military defence.

Who built the canals in Amsterdam?

In the 16th and 17th century, a body of Lords (Dutch; heren regeerders) governed Amsterdam. These people were the wealthy long-term residents of the city who managed various aspects of the city's life. They invested heavily in the development of the canals. The first of these canals, Herengracht is named after these regents.

Why do the main canals form circular arcs rather than straight lines?

The city grew outwards from the centre around 1640. The canals are man-made and the arc shape to some extent reflects the shape of the centre as the city extended outwards. The unique architecture of the Canal Ring is an expression of the Amsterdam's economic success during the Golden Age.

When were the canal houses in Amsterdam built?

The canal houses in the centre for mostly built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The construction year can often be seen on the front of the house. Furthermore, the type of roof gable will often give a clue concerning the age of the house.

Who lives in the big canal houses?

Rich merchants once occupied the larger canal houses, while today these are mostly used by businesses or sub-divided into exclusive residential apartments. Visiting Museum Van Loon allows you to see what a canal house would have originally looked like on the inside.

Why are Amsterdam's canal houses leaning?

Many of the canal houses were purposely built so that they leant forward. This enabled heavy or large goods to be winched to upper floors without hitting windows on the way up. However, the buildings which lean sideways have been affected by subsidence. The soft ground and failure of wooden foundation piles over the years caused the building to lean.

How does a canal house cost?

The price of a canal house in Amsterdam depends on the size and location. The starting price is around €1,200,000 and they typically sell for around €2,500,000. Again, websites like Funda provide up-to-date information. Some of the more exclusive properties are not advertised online.

Do the Amsterdam canals contain salt water or fresh water?

The canals in contain both salt water and fresh water; The salt water enters the cities canals via the Noordzeekanaal, which connect Amsterdam with IJmuiden. The fresh water flows from the river Rhine, via the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.

How clean is the water in the canals?

The canal water is getting cleaner each year, although the sewerage from many of the houseboats flows directly into the canals. As a result, it is officially not considered safe for swimming. However, each year the Amsterdam City Swim takes place to raise money for charity - so it's reasonably hygienic! The government organisation Waternet ensures that the water is as clean as possible by tackling causes of pollution. Three times a week, the canal gates are opened in order to refresh the water. Additionally, they fish out 12,000-15,000 bikes from the canals each year.

How deep are the canals of Amsterdam?

Typically the depth of the canals is between two and three meters. The canals are not tidal which means the level of the water is fairly consistent. The water level is regulated by Waternet and is normally 40cm below NAP, which is a national benchmark for measuring water levels. The locals joke that in the canals of Amsterdam are three meters deep; one meter of water, one meter of mud and one meter of bikes.

Do the canals ever freeze in Amsterdam?

Yes. Freezing temperatures for a few days in a row will probably mean that the canals start to freeze over. However, it needs to stay sub-zero for at least a week before walking and skating on the canal is possible. If this looks likely, the city council will cordon off selected canals from water traffic, so that the ice can form. The last time this happened was back in 2012.

Which canal tour in Amsterdam is the best?

There are over 120 different canal cruise operators in Amsterdam. Broadly speaking, you have the choice of self hire, private hire or large commercial operators. The self-hire and private hire companies are dotted all around the city. The larger companies such as Lovers, Blue Boat & Hop On Hop Off all have bases near Central station and stop at main attractions such as Anne Frank house, Rijksmuseum and The Heineken Experience.

For the adventurous and fun-loving, there is the option to hire a pedal boat (also known as a Pedal Bike or Pedalo) from Stromma. This costs around 10 euro which also makes it the cheapest way to experience the canals.

To find out which option is best for you, check out the latest reviews on Tripadvisor.

If you own a boat and moor it in the city, you need a license from government organisation Waternet. Furthermore, boats which are longer than 12m long are prohibited from mooring in Amsterdam. As for rules when using the canals, there's no Highway Code as such, but a speed limit of 7.5km per hour is in place.

How much does a canal boathouse cost?

The starting prices for houseboats in Amsterdam is around €280,000 and websites such as Funda and Marktplaats give up-to-date prices. In total, there are approximately 2,500 houseboats in Amsterdam.

The gable is a section of wall between the edges of a dual-pitched roof. It is visible on the tall, elegant canal houses in Amsterdam, providing both an aesthetic and functional purpose through their winches. These winches are still used for lifting heavy or bulky items to the top floors.

Over four centuries, the design of the gable facades evolved according to the fashion of the times. Initially, simple triangular gables were used and an example is seen on the 15th-century wooden house in Begijnhof. Subsequently, from 1600 onwards, the step and spout gables were introduced. These had a more solid construction using brick and sandstone. The earliest examples were simple and functional but gradually became more elaborate. Next came the neck gable, with the baroque style of Louis XIV and also the bell-gable with an asymmetrical Louis XV style.

The best way to quickly sample the various canal house gable styles in Amsterdam is to take a walk along Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht. Good examples can also be found in various locations throughout the centre, even on houses which are not directly next to the canals. It should also be noted that these gables are not unique to Amsterdam or even Holland. They appear in Belgium’s cities such as

Blauwbergwal 22

The top of a bell gable has the shape of a church bell and is also referred to as a clock-gable. They are made of brick and have sandstone scroll-like decorations on the edges.

The house above at Keizergracht 50 which dates back to 1622 originally had a step-gable. This was later replaced in 1783 with a bell-gable shown when the house underwent renovation.

The decorative sandstone is often compared with think dabs of cream or the white wigs which were fashionable in this era.

Bell gables are regarded as an evolution of the neck-gable and have a similar silhouette. The main difference is that the brickwork extends into the bell shape

Prior to 1700, the bell gables were lower and simpler and also often have a pediment with fruit and flower garlands. In later years they were characterised by exuberant attachments and asymmetric crests in the style of Louis XV.

At Keizergracht 353-357 and Reguliersgracht 17-21 are groups of three canal houses built at the start of the 18th century, all with bell gables. Another earlier example can be seen at Prinsengracht 716 built in 1671.

Neck-gables (Halsgevels) 1638-1780

The neck gable has a facade with both sides forming an angle of 90 degrees. The external corners of neck gables are filled with decorative sandstone jaw pieces.

The facade often features a shell motif and a decorative cartouche. Most neck gable facades are constructed entirely from brick although some were made entirely from sandstone such as the Bible Museum at Herengracht 366-368.

Architect Philip Vingboons introduced the neck gable to Amsterdam. The first real example was constructed in 1636, at Herengracht 168 right next to Bartolotti House. There are two variants of neck gables; elevated or non-elevated. Elevated or raised neck gables feature an extra step incorporating an element of the step gable architecture. Non-elevated neck gables tended to have taller necks and were more richly ornamented. They were most common in the first half of the 18th century.

The spout gable looks like an inverted funnel. The rectangular block on top resembles the funnel’s spout, hence the name spout gable.

This gable design was used by merchants to signify warehousing and trade, rather than a residential property. On some houses in Amsterdam, you will see two gables; a spout gable placed at the rear of the house and a more ornate gable at the front.

Schottenburch at Kromboomssloot 18-20 is the oldest known warehouse in Amsterdam. It has a gable stone dated 1636 but the building can be seen on city maps dating back to 1595. A variety of buildings constructed with spout gables in the 17th and 18th century can be observed along Brouwersgracht (184 -194) and Leliegracht (35). A long line of these buildings can also be seen at Entrepotdok (1708) which is a canal and warehouse complex located near Artis Zoo.

Spout gables increased in number following the decline of Dutch international trade. Many owners replaced their elaborately decorated gables with the plainer more functional gables. An example of this is Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer Op Solder, located at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 40.

Step Gable (Trapgevel) 1600-1665

In the 17th century, the step gable was very common in the Old Centre of Amsterdam. This style is characterised by a series of steps on each side rising to meet in the centre. These steps were often topped with white sandstone blocks.

Some examples of the step gable can be elaborately ornamented. The Bartolotti House at Herengracht 170 was built in 1617 for Willem van den Heuvel who was one of the richest merchants in Amsterdam.

Approximately one hundred examples of step-gable houses can be found in Amsterdam today. A classic example is Cafe Papeneiland which can be found on the corner of Prinsengracht and Brouwersgracht. In the 18th century, many houses were adapted to a more fashionable architectural style. This led to the replacement of the gable facade.

The so-called “House on three canals” (Huis aan de Drie Grachten) has step gables. This house is located on Grimburgwal south, Oudezijds Voorburgwal on the west en Oudezijds Achterburgwal on the east.

Café Kobalt is located in a canal house on the corner of Singel and Droogbak near Central Station. The café dating back to 1603 was originally used as a warehouse and has a timber frame construction together with a step gable.

Herengracht 81

Herengracht 81 is the oldest residential house in Amsterdam. It was built in 1590 as a traditional merchant’s house featuring a beautiful step gable.

Pointed Gables

A couple of examples of the first pointed gables can still be found in Amsterdam dating back to around 1420. One of these is the wooden house at Begijnhof 34 opposite the church and the other in Zeedijk.

Begijnhof 17

In the 15th century, a huge blaze destroyed much of the city centre. The vulnerability of these wooden buildings to fire led to laws preventing further construction. Brick and sandstone then became the standard material in the construction of walls and tiles were used in place of thatched roofs.

It is possible to spot some wooden gables. At Westerstraat 126 the house has a simple wooden triangular gable. The three adjacent houses are good examples of bell gable, neck gable & spout gable.

Bridge of Fifteen Bridges

There is one bridge which is known as "Brug van 15 bruggen" from which you can see a total of 15 bridges in different directions. This viewpoint is located where Reguliersgracht joins Herengracht. Stand on the odd-numbered side and you can see 6 arched bridges across the Reguliersgracht. Look down Herengracht to the left and you see another 6 bridges. Furthermore, two more bridges are visible to your right. Finally, the 15th bridge is the one you’re standing on.

If you are travelling with that special someone, this spot is a must-see on your itinerary as it is one of the most romantic places in Amsterdam.

On the corner of Reguliersgracht and Prinsengracht is Amstelveld square which is the location of the Amstel Church (Amstelkerk). This wooden church was designed in 1668 and started as a preachers barn. The intention was to replace the wooden structure with a more permanent building on Rembrandtplein). However, this never happened due to lack of funding. In 1988, the church was restored and features a cool restaurant/bar called Nel. It's has a great family atmosphere and has a kids playground just outside.

This house at Reguliersgracht 57-59 was built around 1879 for carpenter-contractor Zeeger Deenik & Son. It was designed by famous architect Isaac Gosschalk who also designed other key buildings in Amsterdam such as the Heineken Brewery. The ornate facade is one of the few buildings in Amsterdam to combine brick, stone and wood.
